About this work
Washington D.C. #1 - 1971 opens on a city plan built from straight lines and flat shapes. The layout reads as a map of streets and blocks with a few buildings set into the pattern. Edward Corbett worked in this realist manner, drawing from direct observation of urban settings.
The fine art print is made on a matte sheet so the flat colours stay even and there is no shine under a lamp. A light frame suits a dark wall, or a dark frame sits on a pale wall.
It fits above a sideboard in a dining room, where the grid of lines settles the space. From the table you see the blocks of colour, and from the doorway the whole plan reads as a simple chart of a city.
