32 Rectangles

Thirty two rectangles stand in a grid on a white ground. Each shape is a flat block of colour with hard edges. The lines are clean and the blocks sit side by side. Francois Morellet made the picture by drawing measured rectangles with a ruler.

This fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel behind the image. The matte paper keeps the flat colour squares even and stops a shine under a lamp. The frame holds the sheet tight and the back panel covers the back.

It hangs on a study wall above a desk where the desk lamp throws a soft pool of light. You notice the grid of colour blocks first and the clean ruler lines next. The flat tones stay calm and do not glare at the desk.
