Boxcar

Boxcar - 1981 by Gene Davis shows painted bands of colour set one after another. The bands step in hue along the sheet, each block sitting beside the next. This organised stripe practice runs through much of his work.

The print comes as a fine art piece on matte paper, so the colour blocks stay flat and the light does not bounce off. You can match the frame finish to the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall.

In a hallway, the bands pull the eye along the passage. You stand at the far end and see the colour steps as a steady rhythm before moving on.
