Night and Day

Night and Day - 1999 by Howard Hodgkin shows small colour patches and quick brush strokes. The shapes stay near the edges and leave the centre open. The painting reads as a simple pattern of light and shadow rather than a scene.

You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The frame finish can follow the room. A light frame sits on a dark wall and softens the contrast. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the colours clear. You can choose a wood frame beside wooden furniture.

It hangs in the hall where a lamp picks out the painted marks most of the day. From the doorway you notice the small patches first. Up close you see the quick brushwork of Howard Hodgkin.
