About this work
Untitled - 1955 by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva draws on the abstract geometry she used through the mid twentieth century. Network lines cross over one another on the sheet. Small shifts in tone give the lines a sense of depth, the way a city map reads from above.
This fine art piece is made to sit on a wall at eye level in a steady light. The frame finish can follow the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
It works on a study wall near a desk where you read notes. From the doorway the crossing lines gather into one quiet field. Up close the thin overlaps come clear and the paper tone stays even.
