About this work
Painting, 23 May 1953 shows broad black strokes laid across a light ground. The marks run in different directions and leave gaps between them. Pierre Soulages worked with thick paint and a steady hand. The shape of each stroke changes as it crosses the surface.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel carries these marks without gloss. The matte surface lets the black tones stay even under a ceiling light. The back panel keeps the print flat against the wall. You get a ready to hang piece when the option is chosen.
It sits on the kitchen wall near the sink. From the table you see the dark lines cut across the pale ground. The marks do not blur in the morning light. The print holds its shape on a painted plaster wall.
