About this work
Untitled 1980 by Philip Guston uses the blunt painted figures and thick brush marks that appear across much of his later work. The picture builds from heavy strokes of muted grey and brown on a flat ground. The forms press forward with a rough, direct paint practice.
A light frame on a dark wall keeps the grey tones readable without glare. On a pale wall a dark frame brings the brown strokes into view. A wood frame sits well beside wooden furniture. This fine art print keeps the paint surface visible.
In a reading corner the big painted shapes sit above the desk. From the chair you see the broad strokes first, then the small changes in tone across the field. The quiet light in that corner makes the grey and brown hold their weight.
