About this work
Peinture 23 Mai 1969 - 1969 places dark paint across a pale sheet, with strokes that run in different directions and break up the surface. The work belongs to the post war abstract period when Pierre Soulages studied how black paint catches light.
A metal hanger is fitted to the back, so the piece goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed. The fine art print arrives ready to hang on a hook in the wall.
In a study room, the dark strokes catch the desk lamp at an angle. You notice the rough edges of the paint where the brush pulled thin. Against a pale wall, the dark paint keeps its shape without fading.
