Untitled - 1980 by Robert Goodnough presents painted bands of colour set over a plain ground. The bands run across the page with soft edges and a few darker strokes near the top. From far away the colour areas read as a single field.

A fine art print on matte paper holds the paint tones without a shine. The paper takes the pale colours softly and keeps the darker strokes from turning hard.

On a hallway wall beside the stairs the broad bands read as one calm surface from the landing. A few steps closer the separate paint passes show as small shifts in the grey and cream. The stairs bring you past it each day, so the picture stays in view without asking for attention.
