About this work
Untitled Glass Tires 1997 by Robert Rauschenberg pairs cool blue and pale grey tones against a rough off white ground. The painted tire shapes sit low and flat, with a few broken lines running under them. The glass like marks stay light while the heavier shapes rest near the bottom.
The fine art frame in white gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. That white border keeps the pale blues from fading into the wall and lets the small grey lines hold their own space.
On a bedroom wall near the closet, you see the broad blue shapes first, then the thin tyre lines at the side of the bed. From the doorway the white frame sets the picture apart from the paint on the wall.
