Gene Davis was an American painter and central figure of the Washington Color School, celebrated for his large-scale vertical stripe paintings of narrow, vibrantly coloured bands that create complex optical experiences. His bold, non-hierarchical colour works are among the most joyful achievements of Colour Field painting.
