About this work
A Bunch of Flowers 1907 shows a group of blooms set against a loose painted ground. Henri Matisse often worked with quick brush marks and patches of colour that leave parts of the surface open. You can see the shapes build from the strokes rather than from packed detail.
The fine art frame keeps the colours quiet on the wall. A light frame on a dark wall lets the painted marks stand out without looking loud. A wood frame beside wooden furniture gives the picture a plain, everyday look.
In a narrow hallway the blooms catch the small light coming from a side lamp. From the landing you notice the brush strokes first, then the colour patches as you pass by.
