Activation Xlvii — Fine Art

Jean Dubuffet made painting a way to leave the drawing process visible, and the picture follows that approach.

The print is mounted in a fine art frame whose finish can follow the room, so a light frame sits on a dark wall or a dark frame sits on a pale wall. The paper stays matte, which keeps the grey marks soft and stops glare under a lamp.

On a narrow stairwell wall the marks read from the lower landing, and the uneven painted patches stay clear from the bend in the stairs. The frame finish settles beside the wood handrail without drawing attention.
