About this work
Albuquerque #20 by Richard Diebenkorn shows a painted field with scattered lines and marks across a quiet ground. The lines seem to cut through the colour, leaving open space between them. Richard Diebenkorn painted this in a representational style that often looks at places and rooms.
The print arrives as a fine art piece on matte paper, so the painted tones stay flat and do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the lines clear. A dark frame on a pale wall gives the marks a solid edge.
On a kitchen wall near the window, the blocks of paint and pencil lines read as separate shapes. You see the thin marks more clearly when you stand closer. From the table the open spaces between the lines feel calm and still.
