About this work
A band painting by Gene Davis fills the canvas with parallel color stripes that run from one side to the other. Alice Tully Hall Sampler - 1961 uses the same stripe rhythm that Davis built into many works. The eye follows the step from one color to the next across the sheet.
This object is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte paper keeps the color bands soft and stops bright reflections under overhead light. The frame holds the edges straight so the stripes keep their clean lines.
It reads well on a hallway wall where you pass it daily. The repeated bands give a steady rhythm as you walk past. From the kitchen doorway you see the full width of the color steps.
