About this work
Autumn Batchewana - 1918 shows a lake shore with a stand of trees against a hillside, painted in strong colour blocks and simple shapes.
The scene uses the clear colour and solid form Lawren Harris is known for in his northern landscape practice. The picture is printed as a fine art print on matte paper, which keeps the flat colour areas soft and the edges of each shape clear.
A white frame gives the picture a clean edge that holds the blocks together on the wall. It hangs on a bedroom wall above a dresser, where the warm hillside colour reads from the bed and the tree shapes sit plain against the white frame.
