About this work
Bâteau
A single boat tilts on cobalt water. Bâteau, Nicolas de Staël’s lyrical abstraction, flattens the scene into slabs of pigment.
Thick ochre hull, slate prow, and a horizon line sliced by a single white stroke. The brush never blends; each plane keeps its edge, yet the whole sways like a remembered tide. A sliver of rust-red at the stern anchors the composition, as if the vessel has just cast off.
Hang it where morning light glances off the frame—above a console in a narrow hallway or beside a kitchen window that catches the first sun.
