Be I

A single dark vertical band divides the sheet and the sides stay open. Be I uses that simple split to hold attention. Barnett Newman painted these broad fields with thin lines between them. You see the deep colour and the quiet space on each side.

The print is made on fine art paper with a matte surface that keeps the tones even. A light frame on a dark wall lets the band stand out without fighting the room. A dark frame on a pale wall does the same thing from the other side.

Hang it on a long wall above a low sofa where the vertical band runs from floor to ceiling. Step back across the room and the band becomes a thin line between two colour fields. Move closer and the matte surface takes the light without glare.
