About this work
Beach, 1950- by Helen Frankenthaler uses a soak stain technique with thin colour washes spread over a surface. The picture shows a shoreline set against an open field where the pigment settles into the ground and the edges stay soft. You can see how the paint leaves a stain rather than a raised line.
This fine art print comes set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface holds the pale washes so the colour stays even and the light does not glare off the sheet. The frame and back panel keep the print flat on the wall.
A quiet hallway with low evening light suits the soft field best. From the door you notice the broad colour first, then the faded edge of the stain near the lower left when you stand closer.
