About this work
Berkeley #8 shows a field of painted colour broken by thin drawn lines and a few blocks. Richard Diebenkorn built this kind of work around a quiet flat ground and marks placed on top. The painting keeps its shapes simple and the surface stays level.
The fine art print sits on a wall at a height where the painted field reads as one calm surface. A light frame on a dark wall lets the drawn lines stay separate from the paint. The matte paper holds the flat colour without any shine under a lamp.
In a study room the viewer notices the small pencil marks first, then the broader painted band behind them. From the desk chair the big shapes settle into the wall and the thin lines stay quiet.
