About this work
Bistre I, 1976- by Helen Frankenthaler uses thin washes of brown and tan across the sheet. The paint soaks into the support like a dye. Edges stay soft where one colour meets another. This soaking method is a staining technique, common in colour field painting. The brown tones sit quietly on the surface.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. Paper holds the wash without letting the brown pile up. Matte paper keeps the tones even and stops a bright glare from a lamp.
Hang the print on a pale wall at eye level in a room with soft natural light. From across the room the brown field looks calm and steady. Up close the soaked edges and tan shifts become clear.
