About this work
Black Dahlia - 1971 by Gene Davis uses a stack of painted bands that run across the sheet. The marks sit in flat colour fields, each band set next to the next without a hard line between them. The image relies on the stretch of each coloured strip.
The fine art frame in white or black gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. That edge keeps the bands from spilling into the room and holds the stack together as one block.
In a reading corner the bands settle across the wall above a chair. From the desk you see the stack of colours, and the white frame stops the field at a clean line.
