About this work
Black Strokes I 1913 shows a loose field of black ink lines on a pale ground. The strokes cross each other in a quick, uneven way. Wassily Kandinsky worked in abstraction, and this sheet reads as a study of line and weight.
The fine art frame finishes in white, wood, dark wood or black. Each one gives the picture a clean edge where the lines end. On this sheet the black marks stay sharp against the lighter paper, so the frame edge does not compete with the strokes.
It works on a dining room wall beside a plain chair. From the table you see the broad crossing lines, and from the doorway you notice the thin ink runs that sit close to the paper edge.
