About this work
Bouquet of Flowers in Chocolate 1902 shows a bunch of flowers gathered against a plain background. The petals and leaves are painted with loose brush strokes in warm tones. Henri Matisse built the flower heads with quick marks so each bloom reads as a small patch of colour rather than a detailed study.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The print uses matte paper so the painted marks stay soft and the surface does not reflect light from a lamp.
It works on a wall above a dining table. From the chair you see the whole group of flowers, and from closer up the brush strokes become the detail. The frame keeps the print level and the back panel holds it flat.
