About this work
Burning Bush - 1978 shows a thick flame shape cut out of a dark field. Clarence Holbrook Carter painted such religious symbols with hard edges and flat colour. The surface holds bold red and black against a plain ground. The work sits in the American modernist line.
A fine art print on matte paper keeps the flat red tones even. The frame finish can follow the room. A light frame on a dark wall lifts the flame, while a dark frame on a pale wall sets it down. You see the hard outline best under steady light.
It hangs on a kitchen wall near the stove. From the table you catch the bright red shape before the kettle boils. The dark ground stays quiet behind the flame, and the flat colour does not glare when the overhead light comes on.
