By Twos by Barnett Newman

Two narrow bands of pale ochre stand apart, leaving a wide field of raw linen between them. Barnett Newman called this quiet arrangement *By Twos*. The left stripe is slightly warmer, the right cooler, as if lit by different hours of the day. No brushwork is visible; the edges are knife-sharp. The linen ground remains untouched, its texture absorbing whatever light the room offers. Hang it above a low credenza where the negative space can breathe, or let it anchor a long hallway with its unhurried geometry.
