Canto I

A wide vertical band of dark red rises from the lower edge. Thin vertical lines of lighter red sit on either side. Most of the surface stays open. Canto I by Barnett Newman uses this simple layout. The viewer enters at the bottom and follows the opening upward.

This fine art print uses a paper with a flat surface. The matte finish keeps the red tones even and hides glare from windows. You see the full spread of colour without shine changing what is there.

Place it on a pale wall and stand back. From across the room the dark band reads as one shape. Step closer and the lighter lines separate into clear edges.
