About this work
Cape Orange, 1964- by Helen Frankenthaler shows a field of thin colour that spreads across the surface. The edge of the orange band stays open on one side and the rest of the sheet holds a quiet tone.
This marks a soak stain method where liquid paint runs into the surface instead of sitting on top. The fine art print keeps that soft edge and the washed look of the original practice.
The frame can match the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame near wooden furniture. It works above a long desk against a pale wall. From across the room the orange band reads as one simple shape, and up close the thin stain shows where the paint thinned out.
