About this work
Cathay - 1979 shows broad passages of colour shaped by free brushwork on a large sheet. The title points to an eastern trade route, yet the picture does not name a place. Albert Irvin built a painting practice around gesture and chance. The marks sit in layers, leaving gaps where the sheet shows through.
The fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel for support. The frame keeps the sheet flat and the back panel covers the join. With the ready to hang option the unit arrives assembled and can go straight on a hook.
A stairwell landing works well for this picture. From the bottom step the broad colour bands read as one shape. Halfway up the stairs you notice the smaller changes of tone between the layers.
