About this work
Circuit II 1972 by Richard Serra shows heavy steel plates set in a tight square. The edges cast clear shadows on the floor.
From the far end of the hall the plates read as a dark block with a sharp cut through the middle. Step near the mark and you see the weld line and the rough face of the metal. A fine art print keeps the steel tones flat and the shadows soft.
The paper has a matte finish so a lamp above the bench does not make a bright spot on the plate. Hang it on the side wall of a workshop, well above the bench, where the overhead light falls at a slant. The dark steel still reads solid, and the floor shadow stays clear.
