About this work
Column Painting 16 2004 shows a long band drawn down the centre of the sheet. The known practice of Robert Mangold uses thin pencil and painted lines on a flat ground. The form here is simple and upright, with edges that stay close together. The work belongs to a measured line study tradition.
The print is on matte paper, so the painted line does not glare under a ceiling light. A dark frame can sit against a pale wall, and a wood frame can match a wooden table nearby. The surface takes the fine art inks without a shiny finish.
It fits well above a desk in a study room. You notice the tall shape from across the desk, and the pencil edge near the middle at arm length.
