About this work
Desert Pulse, 1991- by Helen Frankenthaler opens on thin washes of warm sand and pale sky laid over a bare surface. The artist pours diluted pigment into the ground so the colour settles in uneven pools with soft edges. Broad horizontal bands sit low while a lighter strip lifts the upper field.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print sits on a matte surface that holds those pale tones without shine. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the wash readable at shoulder height, with a lamp set to the side so the eye catches the thinner layers.
It looks right on the bedroom wall above a wooden chair. From the doorway you notice the broad lower band first, and as you step closer the fine grain of the ground shows through the thin paint.
