About this work
Development - 1984 by Robert Goodnough opens on broad painted shapes spread over a plain ground. The colour sits in separate bands with thin drawn lines crossing the surface. The flat areas feel worked and layered, the way Robert Goodnough painted colour fields. The fine art print keeps the marks visible and the tones steady.
You can place it on a wall near the room ceiling so the shapes read from a doorway. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the painted bands clear, and a dark frame on a pale wall does the same for the drawn lines.
In a hallway with a narrow strip of light from a side window the broad colour bands settle into the wall. The drawn lines catch the light at a short distance and the painted ground stays quiet behind them.
