About this work
Diana 1934 shows a painted metal shape held by wire arms, set on a plain ground. The form reads as a standing figure with a rounded head and thin limbs. Painted metal and wire give the image a calm, balanced feel.
Alexander Calder made similar mobiles and stabiles using painted steel and simple outlines. The fine art print keeps the flat red and black tones without shine. A white frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The frame finish stays quiet against the solid colours.
The metal look reads better with a clean border than a busy one. The print works above a long desk in a home study. From the chair you notice the flat red field and the thin black outline. The wire arms look held above the desk lamp.
