Dusklight by Jimmy Ernst (1980)

A horizontal band of deep violet bleeds into charcoal. This is Dusklight, Jimmy Ernst’s 1980 meditation on twilight’s edge. Thin, vertical strokes of ochre and slate gray hover above the divide like distant telegraph wires. Below, a wash of indigo softens into near-black, its surface marred by faint, irregular scratches that catch the light like cracks in old plaster. The entire field feels suspended, neither day nor night. Hang it above a low credenza where lamplight can graze its lower half, turning those scratches into accidental constellations.
