Elegy #2 — Fine Art

Elegy #2 by Sam Gilliam works in the colour field painting tradition. Broad washes of colour sit on the sheet with soft edges. The paint runs in loose bands that do not line up evenly. You see shifts in tone where one band meets the next.

The sheet goes into a fine art frame that follows the room. A light frame sits on a dark wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. The matte paper keeps the greys from shining under a lamp.

It hangs on the stair landing wall where the light changes through the day. From the bottom step you notice the pale band first, then the small pencil marks lower down.
