About this work
The title Espejo del Duende - 1963 points to a mirror-like surface. Manuel Rivera often painted flat tone blocks with a loose rhythm. The image likely shows a dark field with a narrow band of lighter tone moving across it. The marks sit across that field without a hard outline.
The matte fine art print keeps the greys from shining under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the lighter band stand out. The paper stays unreflective so the tone shifts read plainly.
A hallway plaster wall takes the dark ground well. From the bend in the corridor you notice the lighter strip first, then the soft paint grain around it.
