About this work
French Horizon, 1958- opens on a horizontal band of colour that runs across the picture. The surface holds a thin wash over a pale ground. Helen Frankenthaler painted this in a soak stain method, letting the pigment move into the paper. The view reads as a wide landscape strip from one side to the other.
The fine art frame gives the image a clear line on the wall. Choose white for a clean break, or wood to let the pale ground sit beside a warm edge. The finish keeps the border from spreading into the picture.
Set it on a dining room wall where the light changes through the day. From the table you see the band of colour and the open paper ground. Step closer and the thin wash shows its own uneven edge.
