Giant Soft Fan 1967 — Fine Art

Giant Soft Fan 1967 by Claes Oldenburg takes an ordinary household fan and makes it into a large soft form. The work belongs to the pop art movement and shows how the artist turned a common object into a bold shape.

The fine art print keeps that soft form intact on a matte sheet, so the colour does not glare under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the fan shape stand out, and a dark frame on a pale wall does the same the other way.

It hangs in a hallway beside a coat hook and a small bench. From the far end of the hall the fan shape reads first, and nearer you notice the painted edge and the quiet colour of the room around it.
