About this work
The title Grouping 1937 points to a field of coloured bands and scattered marks set over a muted ground. Blue runs against yellow and red, with each band sitting close to the next. Wassily Kandinsky worked in abstract painting, building colour against colour so the tones read one by one.
A fine art sheet on matte paper holds the grey patches without shine. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. You see the marks stay flat and the light greys stay soft under a lamp.
It fits a hallway wall where the light is steady. From the turn in the corridor you notice the blue band first, then the smaller red marks stacked near the lower edge. The wood frame matches the skirting boards.
