About this work
Heavy Relief 1945 by Kurt Schwitters sets a rough pile of found materials on a plain surface. Bits of wood and paper sit at different heights, so the surface reads uneven rather than flat. The piece belongs with the relief and assemblage work he made from everyday scraps.
This fine art print carries the texture of those raised bits inside a frame with a back panel. Matte paper keeps the grey and brown patches from shining under a lamp, so the uneven surface reads the way it does on the wall.
In a narrow hallway, the uneven pile catches the light at your shoulder. From the far end you notice the oldest scraps first, and the darker corners stay soft at your feet.
