Henri Matisse built the image from simple lines and solid colour areas. The fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel.

The matte surface keeps the reds from shining under a lamp, so the blue ground stays calm. A long hallway with pale paint works well. From the far end you see the red figure first, then the blue ground behind it.
