About this work
Illumination Gothic - 1958 opens on a dark ground where pale strokes gather into a soft glow. The painting technique known in abstract expressionist painting shows a surface built from many small marks. Richard Pousette-Dart worked with layered paint and charcoal to build slow light over a dark field.
This fine art print keeps those faint marks readable on matte paper, so the light tones stay quiet and do not shine under a lamp.
In a study room, you see the small marks on the wall to your left when you sit at the desk. The dark ground stays deep from the door, and the pale strokes lift toward the ceiling. It reads well on a narrow wall beside a bookshelf.
