About this work
The title Illustration from Elegie pour Martin Luther King - 1978 points to a tribute to the civil rights leader. Alfred Manessier often used broad painted bands and soft charcoal lines to hold a mood across the sheet. In the picture the eye moves across those bands and rests on the quieter left side.
This print is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel, so it hangs as one unit. The matte surface keeps the grey strokes soft and stops shine under a lamp. The frame gives the image a clean edge.
It fits well above the desk in a study, where you see the broad tones first and the pencil lines second. The framed panel sits flat against the wall and the room stays calm.
