About this work
Inning - 1963 by Thomas Downing shows bands of paint laid side by side. The colours sit flat against each other, with no blending between them. The work belongs to the colour field painting period, where wide colour shapes fill the picture plane.
The fine art print comes ready to hang. You can see the edges where one band meets the next. A metal hanger is fitted to the back, so the sheet goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed to hang it.
The matte surface keeps the colour bands even under a lamp. It works well in a dining room, set on a side wall near the table. From the doorway you notice the wide colour bands first, then the clean edges up close.
