Isles of Shoals, Appledore — Fine Art

The Isles of Shoals, Appledore depicts a rocky shore and calm water under a bright sky. Childe Hassam handled the scene with quick painted strokes and cool tones. Across the room the shapes hold together. Up close you see the short brush marks that build the water and stone.

The fine art print sits on a matte sheet so the greys do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall makes the water tones read cleanly. The surface stays flat and the colours keep their tone.

It works on a hallway wall beside a coat hook. From the landing you take in the water and rocks first. Step nearer and the painted strokes become clear.
