/BIG/The Jewel — Fine Art

BIG The Jewel shows a dense field of marks built up over time. Jay DeFeo worked in layers, adding paint and mixed material until the surface held its own weight.

The image reads as a solid block from across the room, and the small changes in tone appear when you stand nearer. The fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel.

The matte face keeps the darker passages from reflecting light, so the build up of marks stays readable in a bright room. Over a desk in a study the work holds a steady rectangle, and from the doorway the flat surface reads as one shape before the small shifts in tone come forward.
