About this work
Mariche 2 1997 holds steady bands of colour laid down in layers. Jesus Rafael Soto built these surfaces to shift when you move. The work sits inside the op art movement and the kinetic painting practice he helped shape. You see repeated shapes that pull the eye along the sheet.
This fine art print uses a matte finish so the colour bands stay soft under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room, with a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. It keeps the surface calm and readable.
On a dining room wall at shoulder height, the broad colour blocks read first from the table. The layered strokes and the fine art print settle into the room without shouting. You notice the shift in the bands as you walk past.
