About this work
Merzbild Alf 1939 shows a scattered field of pasted fragments, torn scraps and painted marks arranged without a single grid. The eye lands on a few rough patches, then drifts over the uneven surface.
Kurt Schwitters built this kind of work from leftover bits and rough paint. The fine art print keeps the rough edges of the collage style, so the uneven surface stays readable on a pale wall.
A dark frame on a bright wall makes the scraps stand out. It fits on a kitchen wall above a narrow counter, where you notice the torn edges from the doorway and the blunt painted spots from the table.
