About this work
Millenovecentottantacinque 1985 by Alighiero Boetti shows a broad flat field broken by a few hard lines and patches of solid colour. The marks read as quick drawn strokes rather than slow layers. The surface stays even and the forms sit apart from one another on the sheet.
This fine art print sits on a pale wall with the frame edge touching the plaster. Light from a ceiling lamp falls straight across the line work, so each stroke keeps its own edge. A dark frame works next to pale furniture, or a wood frame beside a wooden shelf.
In a hallway with a door at the far end, the eye catches the big colour shapes first, then the small drawn marks. From the landing you see the whole sheet, and the lines hold their own space against the flat tone.
